Our Fourth Meeting

Our group met on October 23, to discuss the progress of our project.  The members of our group are: Chase, Mary Beth, Anikka, Scott, and Robert and we were all present at this meeting.  We started by revisiting our objective for the project to be sure that we are all on a uniform page in our communications.  We all agreed that the objective is to assist in lowering stigma among children and adolescents with mental illness.

We talked about which community partners to meet with and share information.  As a group, we agreed that when we meet with community partners we will not make any promises that we will work on the same issues and follow the same plan.  This is good for us to not be distracted from our glass objectives and yet be part of the communities we will work with.  One community partner we will work with is the NAMI youth group called the Youth Move.  Mary Beth who is one of the group members arranged a meeting for our group to meet with the leaders of the Youth Move on November 20th.  All of us may not be at the meeting so we agreed we would have our questions and objective specified before going to this meeting.

The other partner we thought of working with is Rowland High school.  We did not come up with clear ways of how we would work with this school and one possibility is that we would provide the teachers with information of how to prevent stigma and probably present our material to the school staff and students.  In some of our coming meetings we will decide how we want to work with this school.  Our most important agreement was that we want to think of the partners we want to work with but only meet a few this year and most of them next semester.

  1. I think it's great that you plan to meet with Youth Move, and it's perfectly fine if only some of you are in attendance. I recommend finding out what Youth Move is already doing and where they see gaps. Also, what made you decide on Rowland High School? I recommend exploring the literature to determine what kind of stigma education in schools is effective. Also, I recommend thinking about how you could ensure sustainability in your efforts. Meaning, how could anti-stigma efforts continue after you're gone? Just some things to think about. Thanks.
